The Birthing Programme is broken into four classes, each approximately 2.5 hours long. In total you will receive 10 hours tuition in all aspects of birth so that you feel as prepared as you can be for your baby's birthday. Courses are taught in small groups or alternatively can be arranged privately, in the comfort of your own home. Group sessions are held regularly in Penrith and Carlisle, usually over two full days rather than four shorter sessions, and you will find upcoming dates here. Private classes can be tailored to the individual needs of each couple, or condensed into two or three slightly longer sessions if time is pressing. If you have given birth before using hypnobirthing (any brand), but would like a refresher, contact me for a quote and to discuss your particular requirements.
You will find details of each Birthing Programme class below.
Part one of the Wise Hippo "Birth" module begins with an introduction to the physiology of birth, and how the subconscious mind can have a huge physical effect on your labour. By gaining an understanding of how the mind and body can work together, we lay the foundation for effective birth preparation and begin to change our pre-conceptions.
During this class we also cover the background of hypnosis and hypnobirthing. By the end of the session you will understand more about hypnosis and how you can use it to your advantage as you get ready to meet your baby.
The class ends with a short hypnosis/relaxation session called 'Cloak of Protection'.
Our second class will build on the theory elements of class one. During this session we consider how being relaxed can help you birth more effectively and more comfortably, and we demonstrate easy breathing techniques to help you quickly and effectively calm both body and mind.
We also cover the use of anchors, or physical reminders of relaxation. This involves using your other senses like touch and smell to help you access positive emotional states. Your birth partner will also be shown a great relaxation script to read to you that will help you to practise all the tools of the Wise Hippo programme, and we will complete another relaxation session, 'Bond and Breathe'.
Class Three helps you to begin planning for labour itself. I will take you through the important things to consider for your birth plan, such as where to give birth, who to have with you and how to encourage your baby into the optimum position for labour.
We will also spend time discussing the many ways you can initiate the bonding process with your new baby, involving the whole family! We finish this session considering some of the more medical interventions available to you, followed by a 'fear release' session called 'Cove of Confidence'.
The final class in the Birthing Programme focuses on putting all your newfound skills into practice, along with practical preparations for birth. We cover some specific breathing techniques for the later stages of labour and explain how your birth partner(s) can best support you in those special moments. This includes demonstration of simple massage techniques and how to effectively communicate with your caregiver.
Finally we will talk you through how you can use your Wise Hippo skills in different labour scenarios, and what to expect in the moments after you welcome your baby into the world. Your course ends with a final relaxation script, 'Sea of Serenity'.
